Heartbeat from Joanne Carlton

Synopsis

Sixteen-year old Sam knows life will never be easy for her. Socially awkward and armed only with a brilliant mind and feisty character, she struggles with things that other teenagers find normal. Only her best friend Jasper really gets her.

Eighteen-year old college student Jasper strives to be the perfect son to his successful parents, working himself to the ground to fulfill their wishes. Up until the point that he crashes when his heart fails. The best friends learn the devastating news that Jasper has a tumor embedded deeply into his heart and hasn’t got much time left.

Devastated, Sam convinces him to pursue his ultimate dream: To sing in front of a live audience once before he dies. The friends head to London, where Jasper signs up for the ultimate singing competition. Knowing he has nothing left to lose, Jasper gives it all.

As the competition progresses, his health deteriorates rapidly. Jasper is torn between leaving his family behind and following his heart. Sam struggles with the knowledge that they will have to say goodbye soon. In the end, both can’t help but wonder if pursuing the ultimate goal was worth the heartache after all.

My oppinion of Heartbeat

After reading this book I had to let it rest before I wrote this. It’s so heavy, you have to breath first when you read the last page.

When you read the synopsis you’ll expect that the book is sad with a lot of tears but nothing of that is true. These days Sam and Jasper do everything to get the most out of it and make every dream come true.

If you’re going, go with a big bang!

Jasper is an outstanding performer, he plays the piano, the gitar and his voice? It is magnificent. That is where his heart is. It is falling and get up because he knows there is no later! Sam supports him with all he does. Although they’re both in pain, physical and menthally.

The message is clear: Live your own dream! Don’t let your dreams be a line in your bucket list but start with doing them today! It’s possible these are not the dream from your parents but speek and say what your dreams are.

Jasper evolves during reading in a guy that is struggeling to someone who does what he wants and do al the things with all he has. He has nothing to lose any more. He keeps on going because he wants to make it easier for Sam. So she can look back to this last wonderfull days after he will be past away.

Sam is also a person with a clear view. She knows what she wants and go for it. During these last days she’s trying every thing she can. She organizes a trip to London, get’s a room and apply Jasper for a tallentshow. She does all of that so Jasper can concentrate on the music. But everyday the headacke comes back sinds she is falling from the stairs. She also has physical problems.

Sam and Jasper are a strong team. They cannot let each other go. They know what to do.

When you start on reading this book you look at it and think: This is a big one. Don’t let it fool you because it’s reading like a train. Carlton tells the story on a way it does not let you go. When you start you cannot stop. One more chapter is not good enough.

You’ll get to know Jasper and Sam to their bones ( at least you think you know them) And at the end you’ll be overwhelmed. The story will bring you in tears and you will get emotional. It’s not what you thought it would be.

Conclusion

Heartbeat will you get stunned! It’s a rollercoaster you cannot get out of. But you’ll remember this one a long time.
